What is Reclaimed Teak?

Reclaimed teak is the perfect wood for furniture.

What is it and why?

Reclaimed Teak is previously used teak that comes from a variety of sources in Indonesia. When Indonesian was colonised by the Dutch many many years ago, teak wood was the obvious resource to use for everything. Bridges, buildings, docks, pagodas - teak was literally used for everything! Teak is a slow growing hardwood. It is strong, dense, oily and is very tough. These properties made it ideal for a variety of uses. Teak also has properties that make it ideal for reclaimed furniture but we will come onto that in a minute!

Progress and modernisation over the past 150 years has meant that most of the teak structures have been knocked down and replaced with brick and concrete structures. This gives a plentiful supply of previously used teak.

This wood has the amazing aged look, shows signs of previous use, had done any movement it was going to do and is perfect for using in a high end furniture product such as the Karang Dining Set.

Reclaimed teak makes every piece of furniture unique. This gives a special feeling to each and every piece of Ombaks reclaimed furniture. Every piece has a different feel to it, every piece of reclaimed teak used in production was used for something different and will display individuality that reflects this. The finish is deep and lustrous and may display nail marks, previous joints and other features. All these features are expertly incorporated into the reclaimed furniture as features.

Reclaimed teak is incredibly durable. The wood is high in natural oils, and will only need a light oiling on surfaces at risk from staining to keep it in perfect condition.

One of the most important things about Ombak Furniture, is that by using reclaimed teak for its reclaimed furniture - ALL THE FURNITURE IS 100% ECO-FRIENDLY. No new wood is used, so you buy with confidence knowing you are making a sustainable purchase.
